Movie Review: Fight Club

This two DVD set will change your life in more ways than one. First off, you'll be about 30 bucks poorer than you were before. But in losing money you'll be that much closer to hitting bottom. Don't get it? You will.

Story
Fight Club is one the few movies that you can watch over and over and still feel the power of every single time. Based on Chuck Palahniuk's novel of the same name, it's a twisted satire on the everyday Joe who looks for an escape from reality. The movie will literally have you looking at the world differently, and has an impact that will stay with you long after the  credits are done rolling. The story is told by an anonymous narrator who recaps a strange time in his life with a friend named Tyler Durden who embodies the spirit of anarchy. Through Tyler, the narrator is exposed to a world that is overlooked by most office yuppies and learns that to change the world the little people of the world must rise up. What begins as an underground "fight club" soon grows into a national group bent on destroying the system, without any faces or names.

Visuals
The dark and gritty atmosphere coupled with the absurdity of the actions of two mind-f***ed revolutionists fits the mood of a dark comedy perfectly. The movie doesn't rely too heavily on gore or disturbing images, it does just fine implying what is going on and letting the viewer fill in the rest with their imagination. The house which the narrator and Tyler occupy is so perfectly run down that it embodies the spirit of the main characters. With each locale, Fight Club is able to make it seem as if you're really in a dark sweaty basement waiting your turn to have your skull cracked, or in a luxurious hotel banquet room, with secret guerilla terrorists all around you. The transfer to DVD is almost perfect as well. The image is clean and crisp with no blurs, but look out for the "cigarette burns".

Extras
First off the packaging of the DVD is quite exceptional on it's own. A plain paper bag looking cover with a strange 2 disc holder inside keeps the mystery of the movie alive, and doesn't give anything away. As for the extras, what is held on the first disc would be amazing in and of itself. But lo and behold a second disc with everything you could want and much more including behind the scenes, ad campaigns, commentaries, featurettes, deleted/altered scenes, and even some stuff that you'll have no interest in whatsoever, it's all here. Make sure you don't have any plans on the day you buy this set.
